High-Potency: A Guide To The Most Common Cannabis Concentrates
At Rogue Paq, we are firmly in the dry flower camp. But we've experimented with most forms of the plant to make sure we're not missing out on something that suits us better. Our chemistry has always, and still does, prefer dry herb ground and rolled. But the beauty of us as people is that we are all different; and as your personal ritual evolves, you might find yourself glancing past the flower jars and toward those small, shimmering pots of "concentrates." They are quite alluring and they're biggest dray in our opinion is that a little goes a long, long way.
If the world of dabbing, live resin, and shatter feels a bit like a high-stakes chemistry lab, don't fret. We’re here to demystify the "dabs" and determine if these potent extracts deserve a place in your curated kit.
What Exactly Are Concentrates?
In the simplest terms: concentrates are the "espresso" of the cannabis world.
While premium flower usually sits between 15% and 30% THC, concentrates are the result of stripping away the excess plant material (the "leaves and stems") to isolate the good stuff—the cannabinoids and terpenes. The result is a clean, hyper-potent substance that can reach 80% to 90% purity. Typically they are between 60%-90% for a serving size smaller than a grain of rice. This is very potent.
Think of it as the difference between a glass of wine and a perfectly aged cognac. Same origins, very different velocity.
Note that product labels will tell you the THC potency. 10% or less is considered low dose and 20% and above is considered potent. The %s in between are average on that sliding scale.
A Texture for Every Taste
In the dispensary, you’ll encounter a vocabulary that sounds more like a bakery than a dispo. Here’s a breakdown of the most common concentrates:
-
Shatter: Glass-like, brittle, and translucent. It’s the "minimalist" of concentrates—clean, beautiful to look at, and snaps easily into pieces.
-
Wax & Budder: These have a creamy, whipped consistency (hence the name). They are incredibly easy to handle with a dab tool making them a favorite for those who prefer precision over mess.
-
Live Resin: The "connoisseur’s choice." Because it’s made from flash-frozen plants, it retains the highest level of terpenes. It’s fragrant, flavorful, and incredibly "loud."
-
Rosin: The "clean-label" option. No solvents, just heat and pressure. It’s the most artisanal of the bunch—the organic linen of the cannabis world.
- Kief: A natural, solvent-free cannabis concentrate. It consists of the separated, powdery resin glands (trichomes) of the cannabis plant that contain high concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes. It is significantly more potent than flower, typically ranging from 50% to 70% THC
The "How-To"
There are several ways to incorporate concentrates into your ritual, depending on your preference and your gear:
-
The "Topper" (no special tools rquired): If you aren't ready to invest in a rig, simply "spike" your flower. Sprinkle a bit of kief (find this in the fourth chamber of your grinder or a small crumble of wax into your Rogue Paq all natural hemp rolling paper or on top of a packed bowl. It’s a subtle way to elevate your standard ritual without a steep learning curve.
-
The Vape Pen: For those who value discretion and portability above all else. Pre-filled cartridges offer the cleanest entry point into concentrates—no torches, no sticky fingers.
-
The Dab Rig: This is the traditional method. It involves heating a quartz "nail" (or banger) with a butane torch until it’s hot, then applying a tiny "dab" of concentrate with a tool.
Are They Suitable for Beginners?
We don't suggest dabs for anyone who doesn't already know how THC will react with their own personal chemistry. Once you have a handle on how much you can handle, you can experiment more safely with concentrates. With all forms of the flower our motto is LOW AND SLOW.
Just remember: “You can always add, but you can’t subtract.” If you’re trying concentrates for the first time, start with a piece no larger than half a grain of rice. Typically you'll feel effects instantly or within a few minutes but we suggest you wait at least 15-20 minutes before deciding if you’d like to "raise" the experience further. Keep in mind that effects will last around 3 hours or more.
The Rogue Verdict
Concentrates are clean, fast-acting, and incredibly potent, The tiniest bit really packs a punch. If the effects suit you, it can become a very fun and efficient way to enjoy your ritual.
Whether you’re adding a dusting of kief to your joint (our fave method!) or mastering the art of the low-temp rosin dab, remember that the goal is always to enhance your experience, not overwhelm it.
After all, a ritual isn’t a ritual if it isn’t enjoyed.
